Derby figure group, The Shoe Black, modelled as a Macoroni gent resting a shoe on a stool, a maid kneeling at his feet with a box of shoe equipment buffing with a brush, set on an irregular plinth base with tree trunk to the rear, the whole painted in bright enamels with gilt details. Marked to the base, No.81 Circa 1780

References: ref. Twitchett -Derby, an illustrated guide- p145 for another of the series, which is not marked, but appears to be a pair to figure No.83, for which marked examples exist. No. 79 can be found in the 2010 Moorabool Antiques catalogue, and all are almost direct copies of the work of K G Lück of Frankenthal. This is the earliest version of this group, which continued to be made well into the 19th century.
