Bretby copper finish jug, Dresser influenced, C. 1895
Bretby jug of curious slumped long neck form, glazed in a metallic copper glaze, probably after a Dr Christopher Dresser design. Impressed BRETBY & a sun, also ENGLAND and pattern number 1892. Circa 1895
Bretby is the brand name for Tooth & Ault, a pottery works in Derbyshire. Ault started his own pottery in 1887 and purchased Dresser’s moulds from the Lindthorpe pottery; many of these designs are also seen in Tooth & Co pieces of the 1890’s.
