Meissen figure of the ‘Print Seller’, in the white, c.1750

$9,500.00 AUD

Meissen figure of the ‘Print Seller’, from the series of table figures by J. J. Kaendler, based on the ‘Cries of Paris’ prints showing street vendors, modelled with an unfurled print, with further prints in the drawers on his back and in a circular box in his left hand, on a low flower strewn base, the whole left in the white.
Small crossed swords mark to back, c.1750

16.5 cm
small repair to hand, edge of map

There are 2 versions of this figure, one with a long rolled up paper in his hand, and this version with a round box. Examples are often called ‘mapsellers’, and indeed several coloured versions have maps painted on them; however, the round box of this figure would probably not contain maps but rather roundel prints, suggesting that calling him a print seller is equally plausible.
This model was based on the first print of the third set of Etudes prises dans le bas peuple ou les Cris de Paris, issued in 1738, engraved by the comte de Caylus (1692-1765) after drawings by Edme Bouchardon (1689-1762) .
