Pair of Meissen playing card theme candlestick vases, made for Litchfield of London 1876

Remarkable pair of Meissen candlestick vases with playing card theme, modelled after a Chelsea – Derby original form, the heart and club form pair with elaborate scroll handles terminating in satyr heads, supported on four scroll feet with rams head embellishments resting on a low solid plinth, the infill between containing a laurel wreath framing underglaze blue crossed swords;
the bodies with an oval cartouche hanging from a pink ribbon, one on each with finely detailed playing cards, the other with 1: Arms of McCarthy , 2: monogram ‘J I Mc C’.

Marked to each piece: crossed swords in underglaze blue to each body, and underneath impressed mark ‘L 1876’
also printed “Ausschliefslich angefertigt fur S. Litchfield in London” (Made exclusively for S. Litchfield in London)

Small restored chip to one foot, otherwise excellent

18cm high

 

The illustrated book is the 1880’s Litchfield volume on ceramics, which includes an example Litchfield commissioned from the factory – titled here ‘Modern’!
