Worcester leaf shape dish with exotic birds & butterflies, c. 1765
$740.00 AUD
Worcester leaf shape dish, modelled as overlapping leaves with purple veins and gilt line to edge, painted sparsely with exotic birds & butterflies.
Unmarked, c. 1765
one stem tip overpainted, original firing flaws, minor wear
26.5cm wide
The interesting decoration differs from the full-blown Worcester bird decoration; combined with the sanding and the firing flaws, this is probably a Worcester ‘second’ blank sold out of the factory white and decorated in a workshop.
Other examples with the same hand at work, same gold line, same purple veins – including a facing dish matching this one – have appeared on various auction sites over the years, suggesting it may have been a single service from an outside decorator contemporary with the Worcester ‘fancy birds’ production.
