Ancient Greek oil lamp, early open form, 5th-4th century BC

$265.00 AUD

Ancient Greek oil lamp, the wheel-thrown buff coloured form of simple profile, with slightly extruding mouth, the rim curving inward.

5th-4th century BC

8cm

Condition: Some losses on rim, showing signs of being used after damage done.

Old collection label stating Corinth as an origin, and mis-dated to 200 AD. This form with an open top is much earlier, and is the link between the early Iron Age open bowl lamps and the more commonly seen Roman moulded examples with a covered top and small filling hole. This early type is rarely seen.

The pottery colour is typical of Greek Eastern Mediterranean pottery pieces of the Hellenistic period.
