Luristan bronze Goat or Ibex, with central suspension loop, probably a harness fitting.
Iran, 8th century BC
3.5cm nose-to-tail, 12cm high on mount
Condition: encrusted, partly cleaned, good solid condition, mounted on a bespoke naturalistic wood stand.
This is most probably depicting a domesticated goat, which alongside horses was a symbol of wealth. However Iran is also the home of the Bezoar Ibex, and this could also depict a wild Ibex- from which domesticated goats were thought to be bred.
Neolithic farmers began to herd wild goats for milk and meat, as well as to their dung to use as fuel. The earliest remnants of domesticated goats come from Ganj Dareh in Iran, and are dated 8,000 BC, making them one of the earliest domesticated animals.
