The origin of this set of shelves we suggest is nautical, from an infirmary on a ship. The recessed handles would allow doors or panels to cover them tightly, thus securing them in adverse conditions and when not needed. Such doors to medical supplies can be seen in engravings of hospital ships from the Crimea War period (1853-56).
This piece came to Australia as a gift to an Australian nurse who worked with him in England.
