Sold

Interesting ebonized wood conductor’s baton, mounted with Australian Silver fittings, the central shaped band with an inscription:

“Pres’td to E. Sage Esq. By the members of St Johns Presbyterian Choir, as a token of of esteem – 26/07/01”,

the end with an inset moonstone cabochon.

Circa 1901

E. Sage was a Ballarat identity, very active in the musical entertainment world from the 1890’s.
He taught piano and voice, and performs regularly – often as the piano accompany for musical evenings. He’s a contributing member of the ANA (Australian Native’s Association), and while this baton was presented by the Presbyterian choir, he did not limit himself to one faith, but seems to have been liberal with his appearances.

  • An article in the Ballarat Star in announces the creation of the group – the ‘Curlew Orchestra’, for the ‘purpose of promoting the study of instrumental music and the entertainment of the inmates of the charitable institutions, and generally assisting by concerts in aid of worthy objects’
