This curious piece has its origins in the pairs of Rococo vases made at numerous factories in the mid-18th century, both in England and on the Continent. These exist as open vessels, perhaps intended to have porcelain flowers on metal stems inserted; others have porcelain flowers presented as if arranged in the vase. This is an evolution on from that, putting a candle sconce amongst the flowers, making them into something useful, not just decorative for the shelf. Coloured examples exist; white examples are considerably rarer.
