Bronze mortar & pestle, French, with Janus face, late 16th century
Bronze mortar & pestle, moulded with four Janus heads between moulded double baluster columns, the lip flared. Probably French, late 16th century
7.5 cm high, 12.5 cm wide
The Janus face comes from antiquity - the Roman god Janus was able to look both into the future and the past, and a model head in an apothecary shop could advertise before and after treatment.
