Burgess & Leigh pottery tankard, ‘How’s Business’ humerous print, c.1895

$245.00 AUD

Delightful pottery tankard, printed all-over with two humorous scenes of children working in the city, the first titled ‘How’s Business’ with a street sweeper chatting to a paper boy, the second ‘S????’ with street sweeper and courier boy leaning on a letterbox, with detailed streetscape behind including ‘Shampooing’ ‘Smoke Room’ and a distant St Pauls Cathedral, the interior rim with a o> pattern and similar on the handle.
Marked ‘B&L / ENGLAND’
Burgess & Leigh,
circa 1895

10.5cm high
small repaired chip to rim

Burgess & Leigh worked form the Central Pottery, Burslem, and later the Hill Pottery works. The inclusion of ‘ENGLAND’ in the park suggests a mid-90’s date, as ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ comes in in the first years of the 20th century.
ref. Transfer Collectors Club database #10103 for an example of the mug shape, but no record of this pattern – yet!
The print is typical of ‘pop culture’ of the period, as seen in papers such as ‘Punch’.
