Chamberlain’s Worcester jug, flowers + exotic bird panels, raised gilt + Royal Blue ground, c. 1825
$640.00 AUD
Handsome Chamberlain’s Worcester jug, well painted with large panel of flowers to the front, the neck with two panels of exotic birds in landscapes, set within gilt frames with raised scroll & dot gilt work, set on rich ‘Royal Blue’ ground with large-scale tooled gold bunches of flowers & butterflies, within gold band borders.
Unmarked,
circa 1825
16cm high, 18cm spout-to-handle
Condition: handle restored, tip of spout restored, some wear to gilt
The bird panels are directly based on George Davis’s earlier ‘Exotic Birds’ images, on Caughley and Worcester porcelain. Davis worked for Chamberlain while he was just a decorating studio for the Worcester factory, and when Chamberlain established his own studio, he was the principal painter. This style is often attributed to him at this later date, but there were other artists at Chamberlains just as capable.
