Chinese Export coffee can, well painted in a famille rose palette & gold over an underglaze blue pattern with a peony & rock pattern, the interior base with a further peony flower and an iron red arcaded border beneath the brown glaze rim.

A fine example of ‘clobbered’ ware, meaning the European additions in gold & colored enamels to enhance the Chinese original. This was often done when the piece was new, as a coloured & gilt piece had a higher value than the standard blue & white imported piece. Holland & England were both prolific ‘cloberers’.
