Chinese export milk jug, the handle with an oval thumb piece, painted in black with a spray of flowers within a wreath, a small sprig to each side, and a chain border to the lip, with English gilt decoration added to the handle, to the border and rim, and large & small flowers scattered on the ground. Porcelain Chinese c.1780, the gilding slightly later and probably done in London.

References | This jug was simple in it's original form; black & white flowers only. Arriving in England, it was not quite ornate enough, so a clever decorator embellished it with the gold details. It originally had a lid, but this was lost or broken on the way from China; inside you will see an unglazed section typically left for a lid to cover. The English gilder, however, has layer gold over this lip, which would not have been the case if it was intended to have a lid once gilded: the English decorators creation was therefore a lidless milk jug. |
