Chinese pith painting- camellia flower – early 19th century
Chinese ‘pith’ painting of a red camellia flower specimen, within a blue silk ribbon border.
Early 19th century
Excellent condition, one small mark lower right.
‘Pith’ refers to the paper the work is on, which is actually made from the inner ‘pith’ of a young tongcao tree – first soaked, the pith was carefully cut into paper-thin strips, and then dried out flat.
