Chinese pith painting, finely detailed musical procession, 19th c.
$475.00 AUD
Fine quality Chinese ‘pith’ painting of large size, depicting a procession of musicians, including drums of various sizes, cymbals, and two flute players at the back.
Circa 1850
Frame 41x34cm
Visible 25.5x18cm
Condition: surface is good, a long line of discolouration apparently emerging from the organic pith it is painted on, in a modern frame.
‘Pith’ refers to the paper the work is on, which is actually made from the inner ‘pith’ of a young tongcao tree – first soaked, the pith was carefully cut into paper-thin strips, and then dried out flat.
