Christopher Dresser influenced silverplate jug, ‘Martinoid’ by Martin Hall & Co, c. 1890

Sold

Rare silver-plate covered milk jug, showing strong evidence of direct Dr Christopher Dresser, the baluster form with short foot and small spout, with stylish angular handle featuring two insulators, the lid with a long hinged pull moulded with a stylised flower-bud motif.

Marked ‘M H & Co / EP / MARTINOID ‘, also 7730/2.

Circa 1890

Another variant of this design was manufactured by Truscotts, and named the ‘Tenby Hot Water Jug’. These ‘Tenby’ jugs seem to be more abundant than the example we have by Martin Hall & Co. , but lack the distinctly ‘Dresser’ design of the folding knop to the lid, having a fixed scroll-like knop instead.

The ‘Martinoid’ brand was developed by the Sheffield firm Martin Hall & Co; formed in 1854, the name was changed to Martin Hall Ltd in 1866. It seems they continued to mark their pieces ‘& Co’, not ‘LTD’.

The design of this jug follows the lead of Dr Christopher Dresser’s designs of the 1870’s-80’s, with its angular handle in particular, further supported by the distinct foliate design of the hinged knop.

Dresser designed for many companies, and his designs were freely imitated by makers across Britain in the late 19th and early 20th century as his designs became accepted and popular.
