Marks: the marks on both pieces are unusual. The cup has ‘REGISTRATION APPLIED FOR’ , and the ‘WILKINSON Ltd’ marks, placing them in the earliest period before the ‘Newport Pottery’ mark was used. The ‘Bizarre by Clarrice Cliff’ is standard, along with the small ‘HAND PAINTED’ above that – but the topmost text, which is usually the pattern name, has been cut off- mostly. This is most interesting, as it shows an intentional usage of the basic mark minus the pattern name: this would suggest a make-do adaptation, perhaps because it is such an early piece the mark had yet to be engraved with the ‘Bignou’ name!
As there is a lower portion of both pattern names still printed, it is possible to work out the pattern marks that were trimmed:
The cup was apparently ‘GAYDAY’ , while the saucer was ‘CROCUS’. These are two of the earliest patterns developed.
Intriguingly, beneath the trimmed mark on the saucer is a hand printed mark that reads ‘WILKINSON Ltd’ / H glaze / Handpainted
