Coalport cup & saucer dec. with roses in the Welsh manner, c.1825
Superb quality Coalport cup & saucer, well decorated in the Welsh manner with full rose heads reserved on elaborate gilt foliate grounds, the centres with large rose groups. Circa 1825.
cup cracked, gold in good condition.
The roses on this cup & saucer show the influence of William Billingsley, who is documented as appearing at the Coalport factory towards the end of his life. Perhaps he was able to teach Coalport artists, or some of his work from Swansea & Nantgarw may have been available as samples for the Coalport artists to copy. This would explain the close association between this painting style and Welsh pieces. An alternate explanation would be that this was a Coalport blank, decorated in a London workshop such as the one run by Simms.
