Deakin & Bailey pottery punch bowl, documentary IMPERIAL FAIENCE mark, 1828-30
Sold
Petal lobed bowl with short foot moulded with beaded swags, printed in mulberry & brightly enamelled all over with a series of birds flowers & grapes on a fine leaf ground.
Large flamboyant mark,
crown with ‘IMPERIAL FAIENCE’ above ‘D&B’ ,
for Deakin & Bailey,
1828-30
This bowl is a ‘connecting link’ piece, the shape being identical to those recorded elsewhere marked for Deakin & Co, which according to Godden was at the Waterloo Works, Lane End, 1833-41. The D&B on this mark must relate to the earlier short-lived partnership of Deakin & Bailey, 1828-30.
A quick check in Coysh & Henrywood’s ‘Dictionary of Blue & White’ reveals the following entry:
‘Deakin & Bailey – Lane End, Staffordshire. One printed pattern …. is known marked wth the name of this firm… Another design, titled ‘Villa Scenery’, bears the initials D&B and may have come from this pottery’. This bowl proves this to be correct, and further adds the group of items marked ‘IMPERIAL FAIENCE’ to known Deakin & Bailey, Warterloo Works, products.
Short crack to side, very hard to spot
