References

A service with this unusual ground colour, all painted by the same hand with brightly colourd birds, exists with various pieces turning up from time to time. The birds belong to a group traditionally attributed to Richard Dodson, a son of an earlier Derby painter. His birds are often not so exotic- such as the turkey here- but by using bright and dramatic colours, he makes them comparable to the large parrot from South America! Ref. Twitchet 1980 Derby Porcelain, p243 for a larger part of this service sold at Christies in the 1970's. Further examples include a pair of lozenge shaped dishes at Christies NY in 2002, and a quantity of plates and serving dishes, including the pair to this shell shape, as part of the Anthony Hoyte collection of Derby sold at Neales UK in 2003. Refer also Hurlbutt 1928 plate 49 for an example in his own collection; this is referred to in the old collection label on the back of this piece, which states: Duesbury Derby/ Circa 1810/ PAINTED BY R DODSON/ GILDING BY TORKINGTON/ F Hurlbutt book on Derby Plate 48&49.
