Sold

Derby figure of a hunter, dressed in a pink coat with broad rim hat, standing by a bocage support with red berries, gun in one hand & dog by his side, on a rococo scroll base.
Patch marks, incised ‘I’,

circa 1775

18cm high

restorations including neck

Loosely based on a Meissen model by J. F. Eberlein, c.1745 – ref. Adams- Meissen Portrait Figures- pl V

This figure is apparently not recorded by Bradshaw. It is close to no. 50, the ‘Huntsman’, but has a different hat (and head position), has a different waistcoat defined (absent the belt & powder flask), and has a cravat tied around the neck the other lacks. The feed are also in opposite positions and his arm crosses over his body instead of reaching for his dog.
It is interesting to compare it to no. 125 which Bradshaw comments is a re-model of no. 50, the ‘Chelsea Seasons:  here he is a ‘Sportsman’ representing Autumn, standing by a grapevine bocage with large grapes, with a bunch in his hands. This is the same bocage as this figure, and the arm crosses the body in a similar manner – but he lacks the gun, the cravat at his neck, and there is no waistcoat or dog.

This group is an unusual combination of the ‘Huntsman’ and the ‘Sportsman’, and may be a figure from one of the as-yet unidentified entries on the figure lists.
