Derby figure of a piper & dog, unusual incised “Small”, c.1790
Sold
Derby figure of a piper & his dog, modelled seated against a bocage & tree stump, on a pierced Rococo scroll base.
Unusual inscription beneath: ‘Small”
circa 1790
15cm high
Condition: feather & mouthpiece original & unrestored; neck has been restock & overpainted; both hands with some old overpainting; kiln speckling evident
The inscription ‘Small’ is quite unusual, and designates the size. Why this example has it is unclear – perhaps a ‘sample’ version for the workmen at the factory, or the salesman at the retail outlets?
