Magnificent French covered goblet & stand, in the Empire taste, with classical frieze decoration in a ‘bronzed’ colour scheme with gilt details, the handles as classical heads with matt gilt, the knop a pinecone. Underglaze blue ‘Dihl’ mark, also ‘5’ to stand, along with an incised ‘5’. Circa 1795-1800
Condition | restorations to cup, saucer hairline overpainted |

References | It is possible the '5' on the stand, both incised and painted undeglaze, was to represent 'Year 5' in the Revolutionary re-writing of the calendar; this would date it to somewhere between 22nd September 1796 and 22nd September 1797, dates which match both the mark and the subject/style of the piece. |
