Dr Wall Worcester plate, ‘chantilly sprig’ red & gold with underglaze Chantilly horn mark, c. 1765
$325.00 AUD
Rare small Dr Wall Worcester plate, decorated underglaze with the ‘Chantilly Sprig’ pattern, clobbered with iron red & gold foliage & glowerheads.
Blue underglaze mark, Chantilly’s ‘hunting horn’,
by Worcester, c. 1765
15.5cm
Restored rim chip ( well done & hard to spot) , minor wear, displays very well.
This unusual piece has borrowed both the pattern and the mark from the French factory of Chantilly!
This is a rare mark – Godden states it was ‘occasionally used c.1760-70’.
The iron red & gold decoration indicate this piece was probably decorated ‘outside’ the factory, perhaps the blurring evident in the blue made it a 2nd, which was then disguised with the outside decorating studio’s ‘enhancements’ – a term we call ‘clobbering’.
