Early Staffordshire figure of St Peter, attr. Hall, c. 1825
$580.00 AUD
Early Staffordshire figure of St Peter, with crowing cock to one side and open book & keys at his feet, before a leafy bocage, titled to the plinth ‘SAINT . PETER’
Attributed to Samuel Hall,
circa 1825
22cm
losses to bocage, some minor wear to enamels, in particular to his knuckles….
This figure and its partner St Paul closely conform to marked HALL examples, particularly a standing slightly smaller St John shown on Myrna Schkolne’s excellent website :
http://www.earlystaffordshirefigures.com/103-saints-matthew-mark-luke-and-john.html
The features that suggest a Hall attribution include the impressed title picked out in black, the red cloak with small black circle reserves, the colour palette (although these blues have mis-fired somewhat) , the same bocage leaf shapes being used (although others also used similar), the distinct rococo shell-scroll at his feet.
