Early Staffordshire figure, ‘The Flemish Musician’, Enoch Wood c. 1795

$440.00 AUD

Early Staffordshire Pottery figure, ‘The Flemish Musician’, modelled standing with instrument in hand, a tree-trunk support behind & on a rocky mound base, set on a square plinth with brown line detail.

Impressed ’19’ to base, with painted ’94’

Attributed to Enoch Wood,

circa 1795

Condition: signs of age, some probable re-touching to black & brown enamels, well-restored break to waist, tip of instrument restored: displays splendidly.

Ref. Schkolne ‘Staffordshire Figures’ vol 1 p156-161 for examples of this figure, with 26.181 being very close in all respects, attributed to Enoch Wood. The fact the line is found all around the plinth also supports this attribution, as Ralph Wood’s examples don’t continue across the back. The painted number is probably a decorator’s mark; the impressed numbers perhaps an Enoch Wood model number; a Ralph Wood attributed version bears the number ‘132’ impressed.
