Egyptian linen embroidered hanging, Osiris & Obelisk, c. 1915
$450.00 AUD
Large Egyptian hand crafted wall hanging, of tall vertical form with coarse linen backing applied with brightly dyed fabric cut-outs, depicting a standing Osiris in a niche, an obelisk with hieroglyphic inscription to one side, a ‘Royal Cartouche’ & winged double snakes-head to the top, edged in brown.
Circa 1915
48x155cm
These hand-stitched wall hangings were popular local made souvenirs for visitors to Egypt, and a large number probably came back with the diggers of WWI, stationed in or passing through Egypt – a textile was very easy to pack in a backpack. This example has not seen a lot of sunlight & retains good colour.
