English Majolica jardinière & stand in the Aesthetic taste, the rich brown ground with applied life-size Lilly plants, the flowers in yellow & leaves in green, all delightfully flowing with an iridescent opalescence to the glaze, the rim & extremes of stand applied with a Chinese style scrolling pattern.
Impressed mark to jardinier ‘JAPAN’,

Condition: jardinière in excellent condition, stand with 5cm section of very edge restored, displays well.
Maker unknown, one of the smaller Majolica producers probably in Staffordshire. There are very similar examples with the same moulded borders, often with dragons as the decoration, and with the same distinct colours used, the surface having an iridescent oily sheen. All seem to be unattributed.
