English pottery jug, ‘Elephant & Camel’ pattern, attr. Johnson, c. 1820
Sold
Interesting Staffordshire Pottery jug, the octagonal shape printed & painted with an exotic procession of Chinoiserie figures with banners, an Elephant with Howdah, a camel bearing a tent, the background deep blue, with a broad floral border at the rim both inside & out.
Unmarked, attributed to Reuben or Phoebe Johnson of Hanley,
circa 1820 15.1cm
Probably restored to very tip of spout (overpainted), otherwise good
This interesting pattern has strong similarities with ‘The Duenna’, attributed to Reuben Johnson of Hanley (1817-23) or his widow Phoebe (1823-38) identified by marked examples. There are a few other factories that have been identified using the ‘Elephant & Camel’ pattern, however a distinct feature is the top border; the ‘Duenna’ patten with the Johnson attribution bears the same small ‘lollypop’ and arcaded border.
This attribution is further reinforced by it appearing on the same body/handle with Johnson attribution.
