Interesting Staffordshire Pottery jug, the octagonal shape printed & painted with a series of figures, probably Theatrical from the opera ‘The Duenna’, including mostly ladies in flowing robes and one gent in 18th century dress, within a garden landscape on a deep blue ground, the rim with a wide floral border inside & out.
Unmarked, attributed to Reuben or Phoebe Johnson of Hanley,

This interesting pattern is apparently based on illustrations of the 1775 Sheridan comic opera ‘The Duenna’, hence the name. An attribution to Reuben Johnson of Hanley (1817-23) or his widow Phoebe (1823-38) can be made via marked examples.
