From an old Australian collection.
The bubbles that appear in stems of glasses at this period are a form of decoration, but also had a purpose; the Excise Act of 1745-6 had a tax levied on glass by weight; a bubble lightened the cost of this tax! This soon became elaborate decoration in the form of air-twists.
