George Baxter was the inventor & patented of this bright colour printing technique, the first of its kind. Previously, such colourful detailed scenes would have to be original watercolours, or an engraving printed in black and then coloured in. His technique, which involved a different lithographic block for each colour combined on top of each other, allowed mass-production of a high-quality detailed image – perfect for such notable events as the elaborate funeral put on for the ‘Iron Duke’.
