Handsome George III Sterling Silver table cruet set, with six bottles on a stand raised on lions paw feet, the oval stand with pierced rim railing incorporating classical urns and a plaque with monogram ‘JC’, a central column with carrying loop.
Hallmarks for London, 1780
makers mark ‘VM’ ,
actually ‘WA’ for William Abdy, London
stand 13.5x10cm, 20cm high; bottles 9cm high
Condition: some silver repairs to lips, leg bent, re-attached handle loop, glass bottles appear to be 5 original & 1 replacement, stoppers replacements with 2 probable originals
The maker’s ‘VM / WA’ mark is curious, and attribution on p236 of the ‘Clark Art Institute’ book (1997) illustrates a 1779 London mustard pot with the same upside-down Willaim Abdy of London mark attribution.
