Handsome Derby plate, Billingsley flowers, c. 1790
Derby plate with spiral fluted rim, superbly painted with a central large group of flowers, including pink rose and various poppies, attributed to William Billingsley, the rim with a wide classical gilt border.
Puce Crown & Batons mark above ‘D’,
Condition: some minor wear to gilt rim, small area with old gilt touch-up
The attribution to William Billingsley is strong when you compare the technique used for creating such ‘light & fluffy’ flowers. His style was emulated by other painters at the factory, but there’s a certain vibrancy to his work which we believe is evident in this plate. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to bear any decorators mark at all, so we have to rely on attribution via the technique.
