Indian bronze fish shape coin box, with large swollen body & small fins, a hinged flap to the belly, a suspension loop & short cast Dhokra type,
19th century or earlier
19cm long; on stand 26 cm high
Good condition with old patination, minor signs of age, recently mounted, the fine interlocking mesh chain old.
Dhokra is the term used for the Indian technique using ‘Lost Wax’ casting to produce bronze items such as this.
It originated in Northern India over 4000 years ago with the ‘Indus Valley’ culture.
This shape of box is associated with a bride‘s dowry, and the flap underneath allows money to be inserted into the interior and sealed. It was suspended from a loop at the top & considered an auspicious symbol of luck.
