Ginbari is the term for the technique seen on this vase, with a layer of easily carved silver foil placed on the copper body, which is then encased in enamels – in this case deep ruby red known as ‘Pigeon’s Blood’.

Kumeno Teitaro (1865-1939) was a respected craftsman of the late 19th-early 20th century in Japan, achieving fame through the export market.
He opened his studio in 1882 and exhibited at many national and international exhibitions including Nuremberg 1885, Paris 1889 (where he was awarded a silver medal) and Chicago 1893.
At St Louis 1904 he was awarded a ‘grand prize’ and a gold medal at Liège in 1905.
