Japanese sometsuke porcelain dish, painted rim-to-rim in underglaze blue with the ‘three friends of Winter’ pattern, with bamboo, pine and prunus in an asymmetric arrangement.

Edo Period, 18th century.
Condition: Small Frits to edge, tiny kiln speckles to glaze.
The ‘Three Friends of Winter’ – bamboo, pine and prunus – are all plants that thrive in the cold. Because of this ability to survive, they represent resilience & survival against the odds.
