Japanese vanity case of supreme quality, with all exterior surfaces richly decorated in damascened ‘Zogan’ technique, with two tones of gold and some silver details on a patinated black iron case, one panel with three plump birds in a garden being stalked by two ferocious dragons, the reverse with a tall pagoda and bridge before a distant Mt Fuji, also with two sinuous dragons emerging from the sides of the case, the interior with one side plain, the other with small plaque of squabbling birds & flowers, opening to reveal a large & smaller sprung coin holder, the lower segment with mirror opening to a compartment with ivory plaque; suspended on a long gilt chain with central finger-ring.
Signed outside & in with a ‘Mt Fuji’ mon,
