John Wesley pressed horn ‘seal’ bust, Centenary, dated 1839
$195.00 AUD
John Wesley pressed horn ‘seal’ bust, with inlaid pearlshell collar, inscribed to the front ‘JOHN WESLEY’, the back with ‘Centenary’ and ‘1839’ , the brass base with cross-hatching to take an applied personal seal.
Circa 1839
8cm high
Condition: the surface has shrunk, leaving the fibres of the horn prominent; is stable and displays well.
John Wesley (1703-91) was the leader of the revival Methodist movement that still survives today. The 1839 Centenary commemorated the first of his open-air sermons, near Bristol in in April 1739.
This is a seal handle, to take a personal seal to be used with sealing wax when sealing a letter. It doesn’t appear to have been used as such, probably remaining a memento bust of the great man.
