Superb large Japanese ogi fan, the leaf with hand-painted watercolour of sparrows flying through bamboo forest, with applied gilt tones, the edge with gilt paper, the reverse with another watercolour of lotus leaves & blooms, a butterfly entering the scene from the right side, the thick ivory ends carved & lacquered with mons , an engraved silver loop with attached original cream silk double tassel.

Condition: some minor marks to silk, thin ivory slightly warped, one stick with invisible repair, minor wear, overall very good display condition, tassel is excellent.
ref. Nancy Armstrong ‘Fans’ pl. VI for an almost identical example, with a painted scene & similar carved & gilt ends, engraved silver loop, and same original tassels.
‘Ogi’ is the Japanese name for a folding hand fan, and is in fact the origin of the fans we are familiar with: the ogi was invented in Japan in the 7th century AD.
