Large Ming porcelain dish, deer & dragons, earlier 17th century

Sold

Large Chinese porcelain dish, painted in a smoky underglaze blue with two spotted deer within a rocky landscape with bamboo and pine, the rim with four stylised dragons spaced by flowers, the exterior with simple ring designs.

Jingdezhen kilns,
late Ming Dynasty – either
Wanli reign (1573 – 1620)
Taichang (1620)
Tianqi (1621 – 1627)

28.5cm
Excellent condition, the foot being very rough – with original granitic pebbles which were part of the firing technique used in the Ming kilns during the early 17th century. Their existence on this piece means it was probably not used in a domestic situation, and suggests it is from a shipwreck or perhaps a burial – and in very good condition considering!

Similar to examples off the ‘Wanli Shipwreck’, thought to be a Portuguese trade ship that sank circa 1625

Provenance; from an Australian collection, purchased in New York circa 1980’s
