Large & impressive Minton covered potpourri vase, of ‘New’ shape in the 1838 pattern book, the flared rococo form with scrollwork handles and spreading foot on four scroll feet, the pierced lid with a cherub holding flowers, the whole painted with flower panels and a scenic panel of a castle (Windsor?), set on a green ground with rich gilding.

ref. Godden ‘Minton’ 1968 for a variation, shown on the cover, encrusted in flowers in imitation of German Meissen wares.
This plainer version is labelled ‘New Vase , leaf handle’, and is described as being painted with …”figures one side, Smith’s flowers on the other’. This was Joseph Smith, Worcester-born artist who’s work at the factory is established through this record on these vases in 1838. He continued to paint flowers, and in particular birds, until the 1860’s.
