After a painting by Webster. On the left, the children, in front of the village pump and by the side of the inn signboard, have set up an elaborate structure, one youth is handing to another a candle to light the grotto. On the right, at the stall kept by an old woman in front of the greengrocer’s, the village constable, in the tall hat and swallow-tail coat is also celebrating the first day of oysters; and in the centre of the picture are the benevolent old gentlemen and his lady whom the proprietors are especially requesting to ‘Please remember the grotto’ , ie. donate a coin!
