Leather clad jewellery box, Bramah lock, c. 1830
Sold
Quality English leather clad jewellery box, the whole clad in a black leather with tooled edges to each panel, a carry handle to the top, a dray insert inside, gilt ownership initials to the top M.E.A., fitted with a Bramah lock.
Circa 1830
31x23cm, 14cm high
Good condition with signs of age, very usable. No key.
The The Bramah lock was patented in 1787, and was for over 60 years ‘unpickable’. The mark ‘Bramah / London’ indicates it is post-1812.
In 1851, at the Great Exhibition, London, the lock was publicly picked – after a great effort!
