Majapahit pottery pig, 14th-15th century
Pottery pig of small size, well modelled with a comical worried expression. Majapahit Empire, Ancient Java, 14th/15th century,
11cm long, 7.5cm high
The pig was a symbol of wealth in the ancient Majapahit empire, and many of these models have a slot in the back to take coins. This is probably the origins of the European 'piggy-bank', as this part of Indonesia was colonised from the 16th century onwards, and ideas taken back to Europe.
