Mayan cylinder beaker, Hero Twins, c.800AD
Mayan polychrome cylinder beaker, painted with frieze of figures in conversation spaced by large circular motifs, the borders with a repeating geometric border. El Salvador/Guatemala/Honduras, circa 800 AD
16.5 cm high, 15cm wide
Probably a depiction of the Hero Twins. The circular device represents time/calendar. A very similar theme can be seen on a beaker in the San Diego Museum of Man, California, dating to the Late Classic period (600-900AD), and coming from the Ulua Valley, Honduras.
