Meissen ‘Winter’ figural sauce tureen, by J.J.Kaendler, represented as an ice skater, dressed in purple britches and a lemon yellow coat, a fur hat on his head, warming his hands by a fire on top of an open shell-shaped vessel dripping with icicles, with details picked out in gold. Underglaze crossed swords mark partially visible under mount, circa 1750

Their continued identification as a 'sweetmeat' or 'salt' doesn't adequately describe them, as there is no way to get one's fingers into the vessel to access such condiments or food. It is, however, very well designed for a viscous fluid to be taken out using a spoon...... |
