Minton peacock figure with flower strewn base, c. 1835

Sold

Rare Minton peacock figure, modelled by John Whitaker, shown seated on a flower encrusted branch with small cornucopia vase to one side, the bird’s details picked out in gold, the large-scale flowers naturalistically coloured, set on an unusual ‘flat’ Rococo-scroll base with green & gilt detailing.

Unmarked,

circa 1835

Condition: the head & neck over sprayed with probable break, small repairs to flowers, displays very well.

ref. Twitchet “Derby Porcelain” p113 for the pair, and info on John Witaker, apprenticed at the works in 1818 and chief model-maker by 1830.
The base on this example – unrestored and original – is different to all other examples sighted, representing a lower version of what is otherwise a much higher, more solid base.
There was probably also a pair to this bird, as seen in the other base-style examples.
